    Video Transcoding Problems

Hi, I'm getting really bad output from the .mov encoding... When using high input bitrates the output is very jerky.. and has even higher output bitrates than the input file? For example I put in a video at 1280x720.. with an output of 960x540 and also one at 480x270. The bitrate of the input video was around 1.5mbps.. but the 960 output was over 5mbps, the 480 bitrate was 2mbps (and much worse quality). I've tried it with a few input sources mpg/mov, but this does not make any difference. Can I do anything to improve it? Anthony

    Re: Video Transcoding Problems

Using the existing Video Transcoding there isn't much you can do for the output quality.  We are aware of the limitations and will be releasing a new version of the API that will allow us to enhance and simplify the interface.  The first offering will output Flash Video using the H.263 Codec.  While that does not help you we have designed the new interface to be very easily expandable to include other codecs.  Mpeg / Mp4 is a format we are very excited about and will work hard to expand our offering to support IPhones and other preferred mp4 devices.

Is there anyway. We can increase the quality of the video.

    Re: Video Transcoding Problems

The above release I speak of will have a new API call that will allow you to set the quality of the output for Flash Video.  When the release is ready I will let you know the specifics of each setting.

    Re: Video Transcoding Problems

I've been trying the new flv video presets.. but the low/med/hi options still do not seem to control the output bitrate... on the low setting I can get 200kbs on one video, and 500kbps on another. Are you going to be adding the ability to control output video bitrates - this is important if we want to target certain devices or connection speeds.

Thats interesting, I will take a look tonight and try to replicate your results.  We explicitly set the  bitrate for each quality level so there may be some other problem.  I will verify your test and let you know when I have something.

I have looked at the results.  It seems this is a property of the variable bitrate.  I will attempt to find a way to make it more sticky around a specific bitrate.  I will keep you apprised to my progress on this issue.
