    GetPathInfo - ItemID

    Hi,

    I saw that the GetPathInfo response contains the attribute "ItemID"

    Can you please specify better what it represents?

    Each file has a unique ItemID? Is the ID unique across the MasterAccount, or within an application or...

    thanks in advance

    ciao

    Luca

     Very astute observation, this is an exciting feature that will let you differentiate across the files in an application.

    Take a look at the developer blog for all of the details.

    Barry,

    is it correct to expect that we will be able to use this ItemID attribute in other methods in the near future?

    if yes, can you explain a little bit the reasoning behind this feature? I see many interesting uses, but I think it's valuable to know what's cooking on your side :-)

    ciao

     Yes, this field will be going into other results as well.  The main purpose is to give developers a way to uniquely identify a file without relying on the filename.  There are countless other reasons but this was a request from several customers.

    Re: GetPathInfo - ItemID

     I edited the blog and post above. I made a mistake in saying its unique across the file system.  The Item ID is unique inside an application.  Meaning it will always be different under a single application.

    Re: GetPathInfo - ItemID

    This seems like a great addition, much simpler for db records in our custom apps, BUT
    not that useful until itemID can be passed (as an alternative to filepath) to getOptimalUrls, not to mention copy, delete, move, rename functions; also needs to be part of the querystring added to our new callbackURL on uploads.*

    I hope we can expect that functionality in the near (!) future.

    * I'm imagining a workflow like this:

    • get upload token & create a temp record in our app's db ->
    • user does browser upload using upload token ->
    • nirvanix sends callbackURL + itemID & token-used in querystring ->
    • store itemID in our app's db record for that token ->
    • later, fetch download URLs by passing itemID in a getOptimalURLs call

    Re: GetPathInfo - ItemIDs

    The ability to use ItemID for input is definately on the long list of improvements.  I appreciate your list since this helps reassure us that we have planned correctly when thinking of how to use ItemID (also we added callbackURL which was not discussed previously.)  I cannot give a timeline for this but it's definately a great feature I would like to see out soon.

    Thank you,
