What is the FLV codec used for transcoding?

Hello, I'm interested in the Nirvanix transcoding service, among other things, but I have one question: what codec is being used for FLVs? Is it the On2 VP6 codec or the Sorenson Spark codec? This is hugely important to me and I couldn't find this detail anywhere. If I missed it in the documentation (or the forums), I'd suggest adding it. Thanks! - Adam

The current Transcode engine is using Sorrenson but the soon to be released version will support H263 (FLV 6/7).  Soon after this we will make H264 available in our new transcode interface.

Isn't the Sorensen Spark codec essentially the same as H.263? Are there any plans to implement On2's VP6 for Flash 8 video? Thanks! - Adam

I think the earlier version of Sorrenson was and then later diverged.  I'm not too versed in the history of that particular codec.  For On2 we found the encoding software that supports the codec would not work well with our current offering.  The new upgrade will allow us to use H264 which is ultimately going to give the best results for Flash 9 video at a point very near in the future.  I think with Youtube now experimenting with H264 it shows it is the best codec for the future of FLV video.
