Good points, Stephen. As I've said on my own blog, and on some other stories about the recent failures, folks like Danger and SwissDisk are screwing things up not only for themselves but for everyone. People who have practically nothing to do with those companies are going to lose their jobs, either directly as their cloud-provider projects and companies suffer from customer fear and waning interest or indirectly as their cloud-consumer companies fail to capture the economies possible with cloud storage. It really bugs me when people tarnish a fundamentally valuable idea with poor implementations or operations. The same phenomenon put distributed filesystems into a decade-long "trough of disillusionment" from which they're just beginning to recover, and now this threatens to repeat the cycle. I hope the people who've blithely thrown away others' data and damaged others' business prospects learn to feel the full legal, financial, moral and personal weight of the contempt they so richly deserve.

Well said. This is definitely a buyer beware scenario and it's incumbent upon reputable providers to ensure that organizations are informed of these types of "trunk slammers"

So perhaps you ask the client, would you build a storage solution with no RAID, no encryption, no backups and put it in a closet with no power protection, no environmental controls, no physical security? The likely answer is no, so why would you use a provider who does that?
